Approaching Potential Nude Models In Public: Specific Techniques

When approaching a potential model, I think it’s best to get to the point of the conversation very early on. In other words, you don’t need to initiate a conversation with a woman by commenting on the weather or what a cute dog she has. You don’t need to charm a woman into having a five minute conversation with you before you feel it’s appropriate to say something like, “Hey, umm….by the way, have you ever thought of modeling?” This will sound forced and the woman will likely feel that you’ve just wasted five minutes of her time.

I feel it’s best to initiate the conversation in a concise and professional way. Let’s say you see a girl on the street that you might be interested in shooting. Simply go up to her and say, “Hi, my name is _______. I’m a professional photographer and I’m wondering if you’ve ever done any modeling?” At this point, you have to be prepared for her to say something like, “Sorry, I’m not interested.” However, even if she does that, so what? Since your initial greeting to her wasn’t at all sleazy or weird, you have nothing to be ashamed of and no reason to feel personally rejected.

Fortunately, I’m happy to say that the vast majority of women won’t react in an overtly negative way to your introductory question. I assure you that most women will smile at you and, at the very least, be polite. What happens next can take various forms and will depend on you being able to read the level of the potential model’s interest and proceed accordingly. I don’t want to imply that you must “read” women in some sort of mystical way. Rather, by simply paying close attention to what a woman says and how she says it, you will get a very good sense of what she is truly thinking.

When most men talk to a new woman, they are thinking so much about what they are going to say next that they fail to pay attention to how the woman is responding. Many men will talk on and on with the hope that they will eventually stumble upon something that will “magically” unlock the natural defenses of the woman. Trust me, this is not going to happen.

After your initial introduction to the potential model, the rest of the conversation will need to be customized to each individual situation. It’s not as hard to do as it might sound. You don’t have to feel pressure to quickly come up with dazzling conversation or compliment her endlessly. You just have to pay attention to her and react accordingly.

Women are not naive. In fact, it’s very likely that the first thing a woman will say when approached about modeling is, “Do I have to take my clothes off?”. Don’t get defensive or offended when that question is asked. It’s a simple question that almost every woman will want to know. Remember, just because she asks this question doesn’t mean that she is opposed to the idea of doing it. Most likely, she just wants to be clear about the situation.

When a girl asks if there will be nudity involved, I think it is always best to be completely honest with her.  As I mentioned earlier, I don’t put myself in the position of trying to get a model to do more than she is comfortable doing. However, at the same, time, I realize what types of pictures are going to sell and what types aren’t. I want to make money from the work I do. Therefore, I won’t set up an “artistic” shoot with a model with the hope that I can persuade her to do more explicit work once the shoot begins. I don’t want to waste my time or her time. If I tell a model that the shoot will be an “artistic” one, then she can be sure that is what we’re going to do.

Choosing A Camera Lens

As I mentioned earlier, some photographers enjoy the challenge of persuading girls to go further than they expected to. If that’s something you might enjoy, go for it. Just make sure you know when to stop if your methods aren’t working. In my opinion, there is nothing more pathetic than a photographer whining and begging for a model to do “just a little bit more.”

However, there is nothing wrong with setting up a shoot with a girl who isn’t quite sure how far she is willing to go with the nudity aspect. In this type of situation, it is best to assure the model that whatever her limitations turn out to be will be respected. This type of situation will often lead to the girl feeling comfortable enough to be a bit more daring than she may have anticipated. Whether or not this happens will depend a great deal on how comfortable and safe you are able to make her feel once she arrives at your location.

Another subject that you will want to bring up during your initial conversation with the model is that she will be paid for her work. It is the very rare girl who is willing to model for free, especially for someone she just met. The fact that you are the one to bring up payment adds to the professional persona that you want to convey to the model. The first question a model will usually ask is, “Tell me more details” (or some variation thereof). When asked this, I often take care of both the payment and the nudity questions with a simple reply such as: “I pay 0 for a three hour shoot and the pictures will involve nudity.”

It’s that easy.

Of course, the exact amount of payment can vary from shoot to shoot. In addition, you will probably have to give a few more specifics regarding what “level” of nudity the shoot  will involve. However, putting those basic details out there right away will give both you and the model a base from which to proceed. She’ll be able to immediately let you know whether she is interested; and you’ll be able to continue on to the next step. This next step will either involve discussing further details and exchanging contact information, or it will involve saying goodbye and telling her you appreciate her time. Either way, you’ll know where you stand.

If things have gone well, the final step in this process will involve exchanging contact information, as well as arranging a time to talk again later to set up the details for the shoot. At this point, it is a very good idea to hand her a professional-looking business card or promo card.

There you have it. The entire process can be done in just a few minutes.

You may be now thinking that it can’t be that simple. Trust me, it’s that simple. Don’t make the process more difficult than it has to be. Many photographers mistakenly believe that, at some point, they’ll have to “talk the woman out of her clothes.” Men are so accustomed to dealing with women from this perspective that they have trouble even imagining that a conversation could occur in a different manner.

You must to remember that when you (a photographer) initiate a conversation with a woman (a potential model), it’s a “business” conversation. It is not a “social” conversation. You two will be discussing a possible professional relationship where both of you will benefit. Therefore, you don’t need to feel pressure to say the perfect thing, charm her, be witty, sweep her off her feet, plead with her, or anything else you may typically feel the need to do upon meeting a woman.

That being said, in every interpersonal situation you come across, you will have a better chance of it going well if you are likable and make the other person feel respected and comfortable. Just make sure that you don’t get so caught up in trying to make a good impression that you end up being demoralized if she says she’s not interested in working with you. Stay confident and simply go on to the next encounter.

Before I leave this section, I want to mention two additional tips that can make a world of difference in your success concerning finding models with this method.

I realize this first tip may not be possible for all of you (at least not yet). Still, I assure you that it can make a big difference. Quite simply, having a female friend with you when you initiate conversations with potential models can be extremely helpful. Your companion doesn’t have to be a model. She can be your girlfriend or simply a friend of yours. The simple fact that you are with a woman gives you much more legitimacy in the eyes of a potential model. Most likely, the model will be more receptive to you than she would be if you were to approach her by yourself.

The second tip is easy to do and can be used in all your encounters with models and potential models. Simply ask her if she might have any friends who would be interested in modeling. Quite often, this will yield very good results. You can give her a few of your business cards and encourage her to give them to any friends who might be interested. You can also go an extra step and offer to pay her a “referral fee” of for every girl she refers to you that you end up working with.
